Some fan/s of MediaCorp put up the following questions and facts and I will add now my comment to each to share with you all:

Fan: The first collaboration between Zoe Tay & Fann Wong since The Golden Pillow (1995). The almost reunited in The Grand Hotel (2000) but failed due to last minute script changes.

Paul: Almost lah and 14 years of a wait makes ‘The Ultimatum’ a must-see, really.

Fan: This is Zoe Tay's highest ever chance in recent years to earn herself a nomination and win for Best Actress at Star Awards. Failing which it would be very hard for her to get a nomination again.

Paul: Her role in ‘The Ultimatum’ is likely to garner a nomination at next year’s Star Awards Best Actress. But we haven’t seen this year’s anniversary drama at year end yet…and not forgetting that auntie Hong Hui Fang in ‘Housewives’ Holidays’…

Fan: Last year it was the year of Jeanette Aw and Joanne Peh. This year it will be Felicia Chin.

Paul: Yes, very high chance as Felicia’s role in ‘The Ultimatum’ screams ‘Best Actress’! But again, there’s a year end blockbuster to come…

Fan: Felicia Chin's role in ‘The Ultimatum’ will put her on the race with Joanne Peh to become 3G Ah Jie #2.

Paul: Yes, I think so….and Felicia will also play another unique role as a twisted young mum in her next drama ‘Baby Bonus’…double confirmation that she is a serious contender. First it was Jeanette, then Joanne and soon Felicia…interesting fight…

Fan: Last year Chinaman to groom was Dai Yang Tian. This year it will be Zhang Zhenhuan. Zhang Zhenhuan is to be propel to equivalent stardom as Dai Yangtian with ‘The Ultimatum’.

Paul: Again, it depends on viewers a lot but all tell-tale signs (and more to come) puts him in a favorable position as a newbie to watch…

Fan: Elvin Ng's villian role is to be a breakthrough role for him and to shake of his CMI actor status.

Paul: Even though Elvin’s role was just a supporting role (as a baddie) in ‘The Ultimatum’ but he really showed much improvement…Elvin is good as a villain and ‘he will rise again’…(mark my words here…).

Fan: A generation of hunks gather. After collaborating with pioneer hunk Desmond Sim in Le Femme, 3G #1 hunk Tay Ping *** will be seen acting along with 2G #2 hunk Benedict Goh and 4G #2 hunk Elvin Ng.

Paul: Hunks are ‘in’…hehe…male actors don’t ‘age’ much unlike their female colleagues…sigh…

Fan: For better or for worse 1. Lin Meijiao's first collaboration with Zoe Tay is playing Bobo's (Zoe Tay) best friend/lawyer in Pretty Faces (1990). In The Mighty-In-Laws (2002), she played Zoe's elder sister. Now in The Ultimatum, Lin Meijiao, at 42, will play Zoe Tay, 41, mother.

For better or for worse 2. Lin Meijiao played Chen Shucheng's daughter in Pretty Faces. Now in The Ultimatum she plays his 2nd wife.

For better or for worse 3. Constance Song's first collaboration with Chen Shucheng is playing his sister in sitcom Man Of The House (1997). Then came The Greatest Love Of All (2005) where she played his mistress. Now in The Ultimatum, she played his god-sister (but is as good as the 3rd wife).

Somehow is #9 and #10 a good or bad news for Chen Shucheng?

Paul: Interesting, thank you for being so observant, you want a job in MediaCorp? Just kidding…

Fan: Fann Wong's 3rd collaboration with Terence Cao.

Paul: Really?

Fan: Fann Wong's 3rd collaboration with Li Nanxing.

Paul: Wow, you really done all your research…

Fan: Zoe Tay and Li Nanxing collaborating the N time.

Paul: The BEST & UNBEATABLE couple on TV

Fan: Lynn Poh makes a surprise return but no appearance of her in preview. At least her name appears in the publicity poster credits.

Paul: Can’t please the whole world…

Fan: Desmond Tan to calefare in The Ultimatum as Chen Shucheng's son but he is not credited nor appeared in preview.

Paul: Desmond Sim I know but Desmond who? Hehe…the one with his head chopped off? Many cameo roles played by junior stars and I can't be featuring them all...sorry.

Fan: Benedict Goh to reunite with Zoe Tay and Li Nanxing since Rising Expectations (1999). Benedict Goh to have his dialogue 100% not dubbed.

Paul: He like never aged a bit…

Fan: Shoo-in for multiple Star Awards 2010 nominations.

Paul: Without a doubt, many. But it may be dwarfed by the year end anniversary blockbuster…

If you have seen the 15 minutes preview, you won’t be disappointed as the drama is just as good (catch it as it debuts on Wednesday 27 May). Guess Star Awards 2010 will be war between ‘双子星The Ultimatum’ and year end blockbuster ‘当我们同在一起Together’

Survey: By the way, do you guys like to see nicely edited videos of interviews with stars (like those shown on Razor TV website) or don’t mind my raw unedited videos (guaranteed to be uploaded faster than carefully edited ones)? Tell me leh…

No joke, she really felt that way about Elvin Ng when I spoke to her at the ‘双子星The Ultimatum’ press conference…

We all know how good she is as an actress… Someone once told her that she has already reached a point in her career where there is no role too difficult for her…林梅娇 is like the Singapore’s Meryl Streep’, capable of breathing new life into each role…

But there’s a role which would bother her a lot and she has yet to overcome it psychologically – that is to act as a ‘老牛吃嫩草’ (aka ‘old cow eats young grass’). Literally, it means to play someone falling in love with a young man (someone young enough to be her son).

She said she is comfortable to play a woman falling in love with older men like 陈澍承Chen Shu Cheng (as in ‘The Ultimatum’) or any ‘人渣’ character played by other mature actors. But she is just not mentally prepared as yet to take on roles which require her to ‘fall in love’ with younger men.

When someone suggested roles such as one where her character may have to ‘fall in love with a handsome dude like Elvin Ng’, she cringed and said the mere thought of doing any intimate scenes with Elvin Ng would make her feel like puking… Luckily, Elvin plays her ‘son’ in ‘The Ultimatum’.

Just before Star Awards, I’ve ever told Mei Jiao I predicted she would win ‘Best Supporting Actress’ (which was won by Xiang Yun and Ng Hui eventually). Cynthia Koh and Hong Hui Fang, her co-stars in ‘The Ultimatum’ also commented that they too predicted wrongly that she would win…”我与奖一向无缘” was Mei Jiao’s humble answer to us. She brilliantly followed up with another positive statement: “等就会有”.

Maybe her 姨太 role in ‘The Ultimatum’ could just become her “等就会有” role to win her a Star Awards in 2010…

It was supposed to end soon in June but its growing popularity ensured a second season to be filmed and telecast back to back (from original 12 to 24 episodes) till September.

For those who may have yet to watch an episode (you must be living in caves lah), 《女王本色》‘Paris & Milan’ is hosted by 莫小玲 Patricia Mok and 郑荔芬 Michelle Tay aka 一大粒 with guest stars such as 周崇庆 Dennis Chew, 杨志龙 Ben Yeo, Adam Chen, etc. It pokes fun at social issues and the hosts and guest stars dramatize it playing many characters.

Of all the characters (other than the two main hosts who are brilliant in multiple split personalities), Auntie Lucy is without a doubt  the most popular (郑荔芬 Michelle Tay as Filipino Maid 'Atun' is next in my opinion). It is so popular even listeners called up Radio 933 to want to speak to ‘Auntie Lucy’. At Shaun and Michelle’s wedding banquet, I saw stars mimicking ‘Auntie Lucy’s head-twisting’ gesture when they ran into 周崇庆 Dennis Chew.

‘Auntie Lucy’ is probably going to become a classic TV character. The last time a character became such a classic was ages ago with Jack Neo as 梁婆婆 Liang Po Po and 梁细妹 Liang Xi Mei). It has in a way re-established 周崇庆 Dennis Chew as a TV personality to watch.

With not much TV exposures for DJs these days on Channel 8, radio DJs have 'disappeared' from the annual 《红星大奖最受欢迎艺人Star Awards Most Popular Artistes which they used to occupy quite a few Top 20 positions in the past. ‘Aunite Lucy’ could possibly get Dennis Chew back into the next Star Awards Top 20 Most Popular Artistes line-up.

Who knows…it may even spin-off into its own TV variety show, sitcom and radio show…haha…

If you have read an interview published in Shin Min, you are already aware that Jerry Yeo will be going back to his books. You can read it here: http://showbiz.omy.sg/Showbiz/E-News/Story/OMYStory200905181515-61977.html

For the sake of filming ‘The Ultimatum’, Jerry already delayed starting his university courses for almost a year. Even though I predict his popularity would rise up after the telecast of ‘The Ultimatum’ playing a villain, just don’t expect to see Jerry in any heavy roles in the next 3 years.

Jerry is really one of the very few who can really act. He gets into the character faster than most newbies. He may not be your typical ‘white-horse prince and matinee idol ‘material but he is definitely one who will last long and probably earn a lot of respect as a true artiste (if he continues to have this passion in acting).

Originally, Jerry was one of the top choices to play a role in the year end 46th anniversary blockbuster drama but we really have to let him go back to his books lah. I would like to direct you to his blog (he is the 'authorised blogger' and he blogged on many juicy stuff on the stars) at ‘The Ultimatum’ website: http://ultimatum.mediacorptv.sg/blog.htm

Also, check out 933 newbie DJ Jiafa, another newbie worth some attention. Here are the clips of last nites interview with Zoe, Fann, Felicia and Zhen Huan. You could tell he really bothered to do his homework by reading Jerrys blog (click on above link), even spent time researching and played the clips he found on FaceBook. Jia Fa will also host this Sunday’s show with the cast at Plaza Singapura at 4pm. Here are the radio clips:

I will cover Wednesday’s press conference of ‘The Ultimatum’ and hope to fill you up with more news on the stars and behind the scene videos…come back soon tomorrow...

Here’s a sound clip of the theme song by Jade Liu 刘力杨: http://www.haoting.com/htmusic/350400ht.htm

“isn’t she too old to play 20s?”

“Is it too early for X to play No.1 lead role in the drama? “

“How about trying someone fresh and new?”

“How about casting foreign idols instead?”

“Not sure if she should be typecast in that role again…”

“Come on…no risk, no gain!”

“She is popular, we should use her…”

“You sure he can do it?”

“But their images fit the roles well…”

“Any hate factor in using this star?”

“You sure he is the one?”

With the exception of the supporting cast nailed at the recent casting session, the main cast of the year-end 46th Anniversary Blockbuster Drama ‘我们’ is still in limbo as of this week…

The decision on the main cast for the 3 Male and 3 Female important roles did not materialize. The casting committee which comprised of representatives from Drama, Programming, Airtime, Artistes Management Unit, etc could not agree on the final chosen few.

So, the finalists of Princes and Princesses, Hotties and Newbies will have to audition for the roles (not uncommon with drama casting). Like last year’s ‘The Little Nyonya’ casting audition, many stars tried out for ‘Yue Niang/Ju Xiang’ roles and eventually Jeanette got it while Joanne ended up with ‘Yu Zhu’ and other stars completely eliminated.

The lead roles may be confirmed very soon next week or wait another week pending on the audition’s outcome…Pat Mok anyone? Haha…

Frankly, I wasn’t too sure at first. Not until I found out what to expect at the ‘TrueHearts 2009’ press conference held yesterday - a TV charity show by Community Chest. I could really feel the artistes’ genuine dedication in playing supporting roles to the beneficiaries.

Instead of the usual ‘see-how-pitiful-we-are-now-and-please-donate’ TV charity show, ‘TrueHearts 2009’ does it differently. It offers Singaporeans a glimpse into the lives of its joyful beneficiaries. Community Chest hopes Singaporeans will come to deeply appreciate the daily challenges that they face, and how crucial and significant the care and life-long charity support is to them.

Set in the heartland of Singapore at the HDB Hub in Toa Payoh on Sunday, 7 June at 7pm, viewers will have a first-hand experience of the talents of these beneficiaries through performances such as Yang Ching, Wushu, Drums and Ballet together with our MediaCorp artistes.

P.S.: I don’t wish to see anyone leaving negative or ‘suan’ comments on the stars, the beneficiaries or this show. May lightning strike you if you do so…it’s for charity sake…haha…

No media knew he was going to be a father... When I overheard Zheng Ge Ping congratulating Ben this morning, I initially thought his wife was going to have a baby. I found out later that his son was already born on Mother’s Day (last Sunday)!

I am really happy for Ben. His son is named Javier and Ben proudly showed me his photo with him. Cute little fellow! I asked married man Alan Tern (who was also at the True Heart press conference today - more on this in my next blog) when his turn would come and he replied: “My wife Priscillia just…我老婆诗梅刚刚..."

(Above): I hear Zzen's fiance (he said he is getting married soon) was one of the bridesmaids and I guessed he wouldn't be holding hands with another bridesmaid right? (Someone posted a comment below and pointed out that the slim girl who appeared on TV making those chilli is the REAL ONE, the photo above was likely to be another person chosen to 'camouflage' his real gf...).

(Above: You seen it all on TV last night, how about watching it from the back?)

(Above): SM...mmmnnn...naughty couple...

(Above): This you didn't see on TV as they walked in after 9pm (Go Live! ended at 9pm). Ladies, please don't imitate this gown, you have got to keep that perfect shape to wear this super-unforgiving gown...

(Above): What a fabulous gown!

(Above): Hosted by Mark Lee and Yifeng, Michelle's relative and ex-Tokyo Square's singer filled the night with 40 pop hits. The next few minutes would make great TV viewing but well...Go Live! ended at 9pm... Shaun teared when he was asked how he would love Michelle forever (he remembered how Michelle stood by him during the years when he was 'down')...

(Above): Her relative singing non-stop throughout the night...

(Above): Yam-seng time...

Yaaaaaammmmmmm......seeeeennnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggg....

(Above): The last yaaaaaammmmmm....seeeennnnng...(phew)

(Above): Mark Lee and Yifeng 'promised' a very 'scary surprise' and it turned out to be Michelle's mum singing lah...she sang well and she was visibly pleased with her new found son-in-law...

Mark Lee and Yifeng 'promised' the couple they wouldn't 'torture' them but still couldn't resist the urge to do so. Mark asked Shaun if he was going to 'do it' after the banquet or if he already 'done it' the night before... Shaun took a while to answer and he said they already 'done it' long before the wedding night...wow! Real or not? Luckily not on national TV leh...hehe...

(Above and below): Dessert buffet style was kept to the last and look how beautiful they were...

(Above): The best looking wedding outfit of the year! Joanne Peh and other stars also loved this one...didn't know Michelle's waist was that small until I saw her in this...(strictly not for ladies with spare tyres)...

(Above): Kym, another beautiful guest who will be getting married this year but don't expect hers to be an open ceremony for all to see...

(Above): Pei Xuan and the Malaysian star (extreme right) hanged around with one another alot last night. This guy is alot younger in real person than on the TV screen.

(Above): Look at Yvonne Lim! Rare moment to look this 'ugly'! And look at that very hiao Pat Mok...

(Above): 一大粒 aka Michelle and Ms Mo, two humble and nicest stars around...

(Above): Mark Lee and his daughter!

Wait a minute - that will come last. Best thing comes to those who wait lor…haha… Let’s take a look at last night’s star-studded event:

(Above) The groom - a visibly happy Shaun posing with friends and relatives. I got to know Michelle back in 2002 and Shuan in 2004 (at SPH MediaWorks then). Saw how Michelle risen up the rank to become the darling of commercial endorsements. Witnessed the 'highs and lows' of Shaun as an artiste. Personally, I am really happy to see the two of them together finally.

(Above) A very tanned Nat Ho was busy helping out at the reception table - showing a map of tables to the guests and directing them where to go to...

(Above) Dai Yang Tian took time off from his musical's rehearsal to attend the banquet and he immediately became the 'target' of aunties and ladies (for photo-taking) and female reporters (they seem to have endless questions to ask him whenever they run into him...haha...)

(Above) The 'we-are-married-for-ages-and-still-in-love' couple: Zheng Ge Ping & Hong Hui Fang

(Above) Felicia and Joanne came at around the same time and immediately became 'targets' for photo-taking...

(Above) Darren and wife Evelyn Tan. They are expecting the arrival of their 3rd child this August. I do run into them occasionally in church at Singapore Expo on Sundays...iconic couple that lives life as 简单就是美.

(Above) Yvonne Lim was simply stunning last night...she is one of the very few stars would still look good in HDTV...age doesn't show a bit on her butt-smooth face lor...

You are looking at an “unnatural” photo of an ad done for ‘The Ultimatum 双子星’. When we first submitted this ad to a certain unit in MediaCorp for checking, we were told that Ah-Jie Zoe’s, ahem, assets were way too ‘too distracting 太波涛汹涌’in the ad. There were fears that her mammaries would become the focus and steal the ‘thunder’(抢镜)from the other 3 leading stars – Fann Wong, Li Nan Xing and Tay Ping Hui.

I was shocked and couldn’t believe what I heard. It wouldn’t be such a shock if the request was to ‘enlarge’ (not uncommon with ads in the advertising business) but it was certainly a ‘first-of-its-kind’ request to have it ‘reduced’. In response to that comment, we digitally ‘reduced’ her cup size as seen in the above ad.

I remember those years when I was working on a beer account in my previous job with the advertising agency… After we have shot a female model who was already very busty to begin with, we had to further digitally ‘enhance’ her boobs to appear a lot bigger - ‘the bigger the merrier’ was the norm in those days where beer ads were concerned (like it or not, it’s still the norm today). Somehow, it was perceived that big boobs and alcohol could sell more beer then…

Interestingly, when we were launching Channel U for SPH MediaWorks 8 years ago, we also did an ad including a gigantic banner of a lady wearing a T-shirt that screamed ‘Turn-U-On’. It was a ‘naughty’ idea and we digitally ‘enlarged’ the cup size for a dramatic ‘wow wow wee’ effect.

It went on to win various international advertising awards (the judges were probably guys...haha) but we also received ‘complains’ from women who felt it was ‘insulting’…

By the way, the star who gamely agreed to pose for the shoot had gone on to become a very big star today (guess who?)…

Fast forward to today, though we still see many ads in the market flashing out digitally enhanced boobs, we have moved on and I don’t remember we have had to digitally enhance star’s boobs in our ads. I believe we are already living in the new era of natural beauty.

So when you see this ‘The Ultimatum 双子星 之‘风平浪静’版’ ad which will soon appear everywhere, remember ‘less is more’…hehe…

人带戏 - 李南星

It was reported in the papers that during an interview with the Chinese Drama Unit’s Head, she revealed that only 3 stars are capable of 人带戏. They are 谢绍光 Xie Shao Quang, 黄碧仁 Huang Bi Ren and 李南星 Li Nan Xing.

Every show with 李南星 Li Nan Xing in it became a blockbuster with very high TV viewership in the past. Roles played by him also became ‘经典人物’. Ever since he left MediaCorp as a full-time artiste, Li returns ‘like some sort of a ritual’ every year to film a drama he loves most. This year, besides the much-anticipated blockbuster with Zoe and Fann in ‘双子星The Ultimatum’ in which he will be playing two different roles, Li also takes on a rare second drama ‘我的企鹅老爸’aka ‘House-Husbands’.

Before we see Li in ‘我的企鹅老爸’, I am sure we are now looking forward to his cool persona in ‘双子星The Ultimatum’. For a change, let me show you another side of Li Nan Xing caught off camera. Always the cool man on screen, here’s a clip on a rare off-camera scene of a Li Nanxing being so 得意忘形: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The Ultimatum/61723305930#/video/video.php?v=87731267088

戏神 - 陈汉玮

This 3-time ‘Best Actor’ has really become the ‘God of Drama 戏神’. If you thought his 2008’s best winning performance was the role of an AIDS-suffering patient in ‘不凡的爱’, watch out for his multiple roles in 2009 – each good enough for another round at Star Awards 2010’s ‘Best Actor’ again.

He started the year with the gambler’s role in ‘Reunion Dinner 团圆饭’followed by the conservative Chinese teacher’s role in the current 9pm drama ‘书包太重 My School Daze’. He interpreted them differently and convincingly enough for you to believe they are like two real different persons yet played by one Chen Han Wei.

His 3rd installment opposite Li Nan Xing in 我的企鹅老爸adds yet another potential Best Actor material: 全职“家庭主夫”,李南星的邻居。

Usually it will be tough for any male stars to hold it up next to Li Nan Xing in the same drama. But, Chen Han Wei is probably one of the few capable ones to ‘stand firm and strong’ in a drama with Li around. Chen may lack the real star-idol look next to Li but he has already transcended beyond just ‘face and image’ with 3 Best Actor awards. Another go at ‘Best Actor’ again in Star Awards 2010? You bet. 我的企鹅老爸may not be your usual large scale blockbuster but with the two highly charismatic actors in a rare encounter, it just doesn't feel like another 小品制作啰。

But if you are wondering if both stars would be considered for the male lead role in the year end 35-episode big drama 跨时代大制作‘我们’(暂名), well…I don’t think so.  Both will not fit the roles which require the actors to play from the young age of18-40 years old (mostly concentrating in their 20s-30s) The Drama people does not want a repeat of The Golden Path 黄金路...we will know which lucky star will soon become the leading man…

Really?

Yes and No. Yes because you will feel like you are one of the guests amongst the stars at the banquet. But - no, not physically. Channel 8’s live variety show ‘GO LIVE!’ will telecast the wedding of MediaCorp’s artistes Shaun Chen and Michelle Chia ‘LIVE’ on May 11 at 8pm.  The one hour show will beam ‘live’ from The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore.

Viewers will join hosts 郭亮, 李腾 and Pornsak to ‘gate-clash’ the wedding banquet which will be attended by many many MediaCorp stars. The many ‘surprises’ and ‘secrets’ held back from the media till that big day will be revealed on this live telecast show.

This will be fun as we have never seen a LIVE coverage of a real star’s wedding before (the last one was probably Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding decades ago)…
